Texas Attorney General filed a lawsuit against General Motors for illegally collecting and selling drivers’ data to insurance companies without their consent. General Motors is the first car manufacturer to be sued after an investigation into several manufacturers for allegedly collecting and selling mass amounts of data. As there is a lack of federal data privacy and security laws, many states are implementing their own regulations. General Motors allegedly used technology to collect and analyze driving data in car models from 2015 onwards. The company then sold this data to other companies, who in turn sold it to insurance companies. The attorney general’s office claims that General Motors deceived customers by encouraging them to enroll in programs without informing them about the data collection and sale.
