India’s Economic Goals Hinge on Boosting Women’s Workforce Participation #

To achieve India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047 and a $5 trillion economy by the end of the decade, economists say Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to address the low number of women in the workforce. Currently, only 33% of women participate in the workforce in India, compared to much higher rates in countries like the US, China, Japan, and Germany. Safety concerns, including the fear of sexual assault, contribute to women’s low participation. Experts argue that addressing these concerns, along with increasing spending and implementing supportive policies, can help boost women’s workforce participation.
