Families affected by the Boeing 737 Max crashes are urging the Department of Justice to impose the largest possible fine of $24 billion on the company. They believe that Boeing committed the “deadliest corporate crime in US history” and are calling for a criminal trial. The families have also requested an independent monitor to oversee Boeing’s safety measures and improve its quality. The Department of Justice has previously indicated that Boeing’s safety lapses violated its 2021 agreement. Boeing has not yet responded to the families’ requests for comment. The company previously reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the Department of Justice, which faced criticism at the time. The Department of Justice will announce how it plans to proceed on July 7. Boeing’s CEO, Dave Calhoun, recently testified before senators and offered apologies to the families of the victims.
