Apple’s iPad to Face Increased Regulation in European Union

Apple’s iPad operating system has been designated as a key gatekeeper technology by the European Commission, subjecting it to stricter regulations under EU competition law. The move puts more of Apple’s business under scrutiny, with the company now required to comply with rules that other digital platforms like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft also face. These regulations include ensuring third-party companies have access to Apple services and preventing preferential treatment for Apple’s own services on the iPad. Non-compliance could result in fines of up to 10% of a company’s global annual revenue. Apple will have six months to meet the new obligations.
